Ice Cube's good days begin with Peace Coffee from Minneapolis
Earlier this year, Ice Cube revealed that his 1993 hit "It Was a Good Day" was a fictional tale, but his true-to-life good days include a quality cup of joe. When the rapper/actor/director recently told Bon Apetit about his real morning routine, he didn't mention whether or not momma cooked the breakfast with no hog, but did tout Minneapolis-based (and City Pages' Best Coffee winner in 2011) Peace Coffee.
According to Peace's marketing director Melanee Meegan, this is likely because there's a coffee shop called Downbeat in Cube's home city of Los Angeles. For the Bon Apetit piece, the magazine had Peace overnight coffee samples to them, but there has been no direct contact with the N.W.A. founding member as of yet.
"We were trying to guess which one he would like," Meegan says. "They didn't give us a lot of information. We sent the pictures of our Peruvian coffee, which is a stronger coffee. It shows he likes variety. He's not totally loyal to the West Coast." Would Peace's beans be considered C.W.A. (Coffee With Attitude)? "Yeah, sure. Definitely"
From Bon Apetit:
I wake up at 5:30, 6 in the morning, but don't head into the office right away. I like to hang out with my wife, talk about things, get some coffee, you know.
I make a mean cup of coffee, if you give me the right ingredients. We usually have Peace coffee, or sometimes Starbucks, and I make it strong.
Meegan says the staff was completely tickled by this association with the man about to star in a film adaptation of 21 Jump Street. So much so that several internal memes emerged like the one below.
Finally, although Peace Coffee is pleased about Ice Cube's stance on social justice issues, the lyrical content is a little harsh for their shop, which is located in the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis.
"Explicit lyrics are off limits at the Peace Coffee shop, but tracks like 'It Was a Good Day' and 'Check Yo Self' off The Predator album are played loudly at the roasterey location above the hum of all our machinery," Meegan confirms. "We'd love to invite Ice Cube to our shop for a some Yeti Cold Press straight up/uncut! We think it'd blow his mind. C.W.A for life!"
And, because 4/20 is a good day for many...
