This press release came in over the holidays and almost flew under our radar, but it looks like an interesting lineup and cause: Local music writer, poet, MC, and activist Kyle "El Guante" Mhyre is curating a "Hip Hop Against Homophobia" show on January 23. Proceeds from the show will go to the anti-Proposition 8 coalition Join the Impact Twin Cities, who have been hosting a series of rallies against the anti-gay rights proposition in California.
"This is important for a number of reasons," Myhre said in his press release. "First, it's raising money for a great organization. It's also building a bridge between two communities that should be working together more often. On top of that, it's sending a message to hip hop fans, activists and anyone who will listen: hip hop as a whole is often viewed as homophobic, but there are a hell of a lot of artists and fans who want to actually do something about that."
Mhyre says he hopes that the January 23 show will be the first in a series of shows supporting the Join the Cause coalition and the gay rights movement.
Hip Hop Against Homophobia will take place at the Nomad World Pub on Friday, January 23. Featuring Maria Isa, Kredentials, El Guante & See More Perspective, Toki Wright, Alicia Leafgreen & DeeJay Blowtorch; hosted by Tish Jones. 21+. $5. 9 p.m.
