HazelFest, the sobriety-championing music festival presented by Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, is set to return August 1 to Center City, Minn., for its third annual run.
This year's lineup offers a lot to like for Twin Cities music fans, with folk-turned-soul star Caroline Smith, twangy songwriting ace Haley Bonar, and adoptive/dexterous rapper Astronautalis topping the bill. Davina & the Vagabonds, GB Leighton, and DJ Last Word are also set to perform at the alcohol-free fest.
Special guest speaker Mackenzie Phillips, star of the ominously named '70s sitcom One Day at a Time, will address her lifelong battles with addiction. (Local-ish music trivia: Phillips was name-dropped in the 2005 Hold Steady song "Cattle and the Creeping Things.")
The event will be hosted by 89.3 the Current DJ David Campbell, who spoke openly and powerfully last year about his own struggles with sobriety.Tickets are $15 advance and $25 at the door of the Hazelden Campus. Kids under 12 get in free.
