Girls Got Rhythm Fest announces 2013 Lineup
The inaugural Girls Got Rhythm Fest deserves an emphatic high-five. If not only for booking an astounding two-day lineup headlined by such esteemed talent as Ronnie Spector -- Gimme Noise is still levitating over her Johnny Thunders cover -- but also for getting Minneapolis's lazy bones over to the Capitol City for once.
It's especially great and well-deserved news to hear that the operation has survived for a round deux in May. This year's draw at Amsterdam Bar & Hall is a little less pin curls and a smidge more Dakota Fanning. Headlining in 2k13, of infamous '70s teen-rock fame: Cheri Currie, or, the blonde Runaway.
Following in tradition of last year, the supporting docket of bands focuses heavily on notable female-fronted punk outfits who have slipped through the cracks of lasting rock acclaim -- ah, the Muffs -- meshed with relevant local up-and-comers.
San Francisco offers the Avengers, a fiery, guitar-driven burst of Ramones-esque fury. GGR Fest co-founder Travis Ramin introduces Ana Lucia, a Berlin-based artist (formerly of Busy Signals) whose music he's produced. Sugar Stems of Milwaukee create the impeccable variation of pop-punk that's built for quintessential '90s rom-coms, and there's no complaints about that niche. The ViGNETTES riff out a more unrefined riot grrrl vibe that thrives off of feedback and gritty vocals.
Astro Girl Records-founding Marilu Fagiani carries her multi-platform Italian perspective to Marilu and the Machetes. Local representation will come from Is/Is, Gateway District, and (hype alert!) Total Trash.
Girls Got Rhythm Fest 2013 will be held at Amsterdam Bar & Hall on May 10 & 11. 2-day passes and daily tickets are already available for purchase on the Girls Got Rhythm website. 2-day passes are $35. Daily admission is $20 per night.
