It's getting closer... OMG. Four days. What will we wear? What is Mallman wearing? Have you bought your tickets yet? Ack!
In case you haven't heard, we are throwing a huge party this Saturday, February 6, at First Avenue to raise money for the relief efforts in Haiti. Gimme Shelter: A Benefit for Haiti will feature co-headliners Mark Mallman and Solid Gold, openers Peter Wolf Crier and Zoo Animal, and DJs Jimmy2Times and Mike 2600. To get ready for the benefit, we are counting down and featuring a different performer each day of the week. Yesterday, we profiled Mark Mallman, and today we want to get you up to speed with Solid Gold.
Of all of the performers in the Gimme Shelter lineup, Solid Gold is probably one of the most familiar names for casual local music fans. Their songs are in heavy rotation on the local radio stations, they have received a deafening roar of buzz from local publications, and they have headlined big sold-out shows at the Walker and First Avenue. They will return to the Mainroom this weekend on the heels of the Current's very sold-out birthday show last Friday, giving fans who were locked out of last weekend's show another chance to catch them in action.
As with Mallman, Solid Gold were featured on the cover of our paper last year, and I had an opportunity to catch up with them in New York while they played a high-profile CMJ showcase and schmoozed with the Mountain Dew-owned imprint Green Label Sound. Read the feature article here, and check out these videos for an idea of what they sound like live:
And just for fun, here's a video of the Solid Gold boys singing "Maneater" at the U Otter Stop Inn, while on a detour from our cover shoot:
Solid Gold will play last at our benefit, which means they should take the stage around 9:30 p.m. Purchase tickets in advance on the First Ave website (warning: involves an extra Ticketmaster fee) or at local ticket outlets.
