Plain Ole Bill, DJ Fundo, Last Word, and Jimmy Two Times once again expanded their Get Cryphy dance night to fit First Avenue's mainroom for their anniversary. It was a fitting end to the seven years the crew held down a monthly residency in the Record Room. Stacked with guest appearances and raw rap classics, the night was as chaotic and sweaty as the diverse crowd has come to expect.

Flanked by dancing girls and backstage cool kids, the four DJs seamlessly spun an array of rap tracks from countless regions, eras, and aesthetics on their combined eight turntables. St. Paul Slim ran hosting duties as usual, rapping along to every song and encouraging the crowd to lose their shit. There was a definite arc through the night, with tension building on the early end with recognizable throwbacks leading into the climactic hot new hits and certifiable classics, and as the crowd grew in number, the song choices intensified.

Running through a staggering amount of material, the crew switched between tracks quickly and occasionally created mini-arcs of related songs: the hyphy-focused "Tell Me When to Go" into "Function" into "Blow The Whistle," the buttocks-themed suite "Bubble Butt" into "Ms. New Booty," the crunk classics that this generation will play for their embarrassed children "Get Low" into "Wait (The Whisper Song)," the late-'90s New York hard-as-nails closing set of "Ante Up" into "Simon Says" into "Lean Back" into "Ruff Ryders Anthem." It was a meticulously crafted and painstakingly realized setlist that sounded effortless and loose. 

The interspersed guest appearances created some great momentum and memorable moments. Mike the Martyr proved his mettle adapting his grimy, laid-back flow to the big stage, shouting out local South Side streets over soulful sampled grooves. Toki Wright dug into his back catalog as well as performing some newer Big Cats-produced material, knowingly screaming how he did not give a fuck and how he felt strongly about turning up to fit the particular occasion. At one point he slipped and fell but jumped right back up and continued rapping so slickly it was as if it never happened.

Lizzo owned the stage with a new track that brazenly trumpeted body positivity over an uptempo beat before returning for her hit "Batches and Cookies" with Sophia Eris. Bobby Raps dominated the stage, rapping at full volume until he went hoarse over a pair of newer self-produced bangers. Astronautalis showed off his love for Cryphy-style mainstream rap with a never-before-heard song that fit his underground aesthetic to the distorted trap of his wide-ranging influences.

RP Hooks got intense with "Paranoid," a dark smoke song that gave him license to wild out with the crowd. Allan Kingdom had perhaps the most triumphant moment after performing "Evergreens," staying on stage to rock along Cryphy dropping Kanye West's "All Day," which features an appearance from the Northern Gentleman himself, during which the crowd went insane.

Le1f's pair of guest spots, rapping in black and gold vampire capes and torn knitted top, respectively, proved his inclusion was perfectly chosen, and his combination of forward-thinking production and incomparable stage persona made for one of the night's biggest highlights.

But the left-field addition of Tickle Torture and his entourage of mostly nude gold-painted heathens helped bring the party to the next level of debauchery, spraying confetti from phallic cannons and encouraging audience raunchiness with onstage writhing and shiny codpieces. It was a visually epic stint of bizarreness that fit the funk and the sexuality inherent to a Cryphy night. 

After T.I.'s "What You Know" closed the night after 2 a.m., Last Word grabbed the microphone to insist that Cryphy was not going anywhere. "We might be done with the Record Room, but we ain't done!" he screamed emphatically. "We're at this forever, don't forget that shit!"

Personal Bias: I may or may not have been under the influence of alcohol.

The Crowd: A wide-ranging cross section of the city all interested in partying hard.

Overheard in the Crowd: During Trinidad James's "All Gold Everything" -- "I wish I'd popped a molly..."
