David Byrne and St. Vincent to launch U.S. tour in Minneapolis
For how often St. Vincent comes to town, you'd think she's moving in. For the
third second time in the span of four months, Annie Clark is booked to perform in the Twin Cities. This September, she joins ex-Talking Heads mastermind David Byrne on the first date of a joint tour celebrating their forthcoming collaborative album, Love This Giant, due September 11.
This visit comes after Clark's rowdy crowd-surfing at First Avenue in May, and
following Friday's Wits performance with comedian Bobcat Goldthwait -- sadly, no collaborative album planned for them -- at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Update: St. Vincent will not perform at Wits on Friday -- story here.
Byrne confirms that they'll perform songs from Love This Giant, and some familiar ones from their own catalog. The album will be released worldwide by 4AD via exclusive licensing from Byrne's label Todo Mundo. According to a press release, the album was recorded primarily at Water Music in Hoboken, NJ, over the past two years. Byrne and St. Vincent co-wrote ten of the 12 tracks, and each wrote one song solo. Expect "an explosive brass band" and drum programming by John Congleton (the Walkmen, Modest Mouse, Xiu Xiu).

It's an honest-to-god, straight-down-the-middle thing. He wrote music, I wrote music; he wrote words, I wrote words. He sings half the songs, I wrote half the songs. I've never been that closely entwined in the songwriting, arranging, singing, and lyric-writing process with anyone. On occasion, I found myself writing vocal melodies that were very much like, "What would David Byrne do?" It ends up that I'm singing some of that stuff, though.
Surely, a grandiose St. Vincent show with Byrne at the State Theater on September 15 should prove to be drastically different than her
. But this is still a Clark-a-thon in 2012 for the Twin Cities.
