City Pages 10 Thousand Sounds Festival 2014 lineup

The second annual City Pages 10 Thousand Sounds Festival lineup is here! Our day of music, food, beverages, and companionship returns to downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, July 26.

Just the other day, members of the local media wondered when Poliça would make their live return in Minneapolis to mark the re-release of Shulamith and the new Raw Exit EP's emergence. It's a treat to announce that Channy Leaneagh and her group's piercing synths, rumbling bass, and two-drum attack will headline our day, which will be hosted by 89.3 the Current's Barb Abney.

Poliça -- guided by producer Ryan Olson (Gayngs, Marijuana Deathsquads) -- exploded onto the local and national scene in 2011-12 with material from Give You the Ghost. Last year, Leaneagh, bassist Chris Bierden, and drummers Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu grew artistic and emotional versatility on Shulamith. Featuring Justin Vernon's turn on the passionate "Tiff," the album is darker and murkier than its predecessor, but also thoroughly danceable. The Raw Exit EP is a powerful four-song capper on the cycle with one of Leaneagh's best vocal performance to date on a cover of Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me."

The rest of the bill includes a very special guest who we aren't announcing just yet. (We're almost positive it's not Low or the Replacements.) Update!

Sylvan Esso will be in the second slot. Though they both have folk-rock in their background, the North Carolina duo of Amelia Meath (Mountain Man) on vocals and electronic producer Nick Sanborn (Megafaun, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Made of Oak) get it done with synthesized means on their self-titled debut. "Coffee" is a playful mix of minimalist dance music and incidental sounds with Meath bringing plentiful flow with her evocative voice.

Allan Kingdom, who announced at Soundset that his next project is titled Future Memoirs, is on the cutting edge of the Twin Cities hip-hop scene. With electrifying dance moves, crisp and quick rhymes, and that unpredictability factor, he's a welcome addition to this year's lineup.
City Pages' Best New Band of 2013 was Carroll. It's exciting to bring this hard-working indie rock troupe to the stage with a wealth of new material like the recently debuted "Bad Water," coming off their forthcoming full-length recorded with producer/ engineer Jon Low (The National, Twin Sister, Local Natives).

To stamp this lineup with the "Nice one!" it needs, we announce Frankie Teardrop. With songs like "Bling Item" and "Chicago," this garage-rock foursome led by their titular singer/guitarist have been ripping it both here in town and around the country as Howler's opening act.

Update: We have also added Tree Blood. Our 2014 Best Band Name recipients will get things noisy and ferocious early. Colin Wilkinson (vocals/guitars/samples), Simon Brooks (vocals/baritone guitar), and Walker Neudorff (drums) have a new tape out June 21 called First. Here's "Don't Wait" off of it. Plenty more on them soon.

Set Times:
4:10 p.m. Tree Blood
4:55 p.m. Frankie Teardrop
5:40 p.m. Carroll
6:30 p.m. Allan Kingdom
7:20 p.m. Sylvan Esso
8:35 p.m. Poliça
