Celebrate New Year's Eve 2014 in the Twin Cities with live music
Braving the murderous Twin Cities climate on New Year's Eve takes commitment, a strong jaw, and the phone number for a reliable cab company. But look on the bright side — with no major apocalypses planned for the end of this year, you can at least be confident we'll all survive long enough to tell our NYE stories on Wednesday. Might as well make plans you'll enjoy this time around, and Gimme Noise has a roundup of the best music-focused events to ring in the new year.
New Year's Eve with Solid Gold
Icehouse has quickly become Eat Street's classiest club, with a regular selection of tastefully curated shows and a menu full of classy cocktails and chic bar food. Their New Year's show will play to that clientele, with varying packages depending on your investment. For $100 you get the full monte, including a five-course prix fixe dinner with wine pairings from World Class Wines before Solid Gold's full band takes over with music at 10 p.m., or you can opt for cheaper options for music or dinner only. 21+, $20 and up, 5 p.m. dinner, 10 p.m. music. 2528 Nicollet Ave., Minneapols; 612.276.6523.
Crystal Ball 10th Anniversary with Har Mar Superstar
International Market Square
While it's not always a place that screams "party," the Internatonal Market Square building just west of downtown Minneapolis will be the site of this year's Crystal Ball, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. If you've got money to burn, this is definitely your event, as the building's spectacular architecture means five floors of dancing and a staggering 250 bars. Bottle service? Naturally. Shuttles to and from the venue? You bet! VIP cabanas? Play on, playa! Just remember to dress up, as the event is a "Class Act Environment," which means no scrubs allowed. DJs Include Strangelove, Fresko, DJ Indy, Kurt Schultz, Chris Castle, Julius Romero, and Lindsay "Sheik" Earney. 21+, $40 and up, 8 p.m. 275 Market St., Minneapolis; 612-338-6250.
New Year's with Night Moves
7th St. Entry
Let's say you desire something a little more sultry to ring in 2014. Night Moves and Pony Bwoy will satisfy those urges and so much more, baby. Trying out their new "Cream Sleeve" moniker, the swoon-worthy Moves will pair their countrypolitan-flecked indie with the avant-R&B of Pony Bwoy, which features rapper/wildman Spyder Baybie of the Clerb. More conventional indie fellas Carroll and Fatty Acids open. 18+, $10-$12, 8 p.m. 701 First Ave. N., Minneapolis; 612-332-1775.
Triple rock Social Club
There's no real evidence that this is an actual New Year's show, so if you're the kind of person who likes to grumble humbugs about the holidays, you might have just found plans. The night will host four strong local rock groups, ranging from heavy post-hardcore (Bloodnstuff & Buildings) to groovier territory (Red Daughters), plus good taps and an unbeatable punk atmosphere. What else could you possibly need? With Speed's the Name. 18+, $8-$10, 9 p.m. 629 Cedar Ave., Minneapolis, 612-333-7399.
NYE Cover Band Show
Traditional cover bands can be as un-hip as dad jeans — exceptions to this rule, you know who you are — but you still will want to head east to the Turf Club. With members of a diverse pool of groups including Seawhores, STNNNG, Moonstone, Gospel Gossip, Robust Worlds, Vampire Hands, the Chambermaids, and Voytek performing classic chestnuts from the catalog of Bowie, the Doors, and Blue Oyster Cult, the Turf is your ticket to get tanked and sing along. With DJ Mark McGee. 21+, $10, 9 p.m. 1601 University Ave. W., St. Paul; 651-647-0486.
Dawes NYE 2013
Serenading revelers will be the Twin Cities' favorite L.A. alt-country band, Dawes, and the shabby-chic digs of the Varsity Theater always make for a unique atmosphere. As usual, there's a champagne toast, and the VIP ticket gets you a chance to meet Taylor Goldsmith and company. With Field Report. 18+, $75-$125, 8 p.m. 1308 Fourth St. SE, Minneapolis, 612-604-0222.
