Cedar Cultural Center named best world music venue
Kudos are in order for the Cedar Cultural Center, as the readers of About.com have crowned the venue the Best World Music Venue for 2012. Depending on how you look at it, this is a slightly more prestigious honor than finishing second in Livability.com's poll for the best music scene in the country.
There are certainly a wealth of events that could be considered "world" music shows at the Cedar, but many folks locally simply tout the kindness of the volunteers who toil away to keep every concert -- even amid a Bradford Cox "My Sharona" freak-out -- a welcoming experience.
The other four other finalists in the category are St. Ethelburga's Centre in London, Ashkenaz in Berkeley, California, Barbes in Brooklyn, and Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music.
And, just in case the casual observer needs some solid world in their diet in the coming months, notable Cedar shows include:
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 on April 14
Lee 'Scratch' Perry on May 23
Amadou & Mariam on August 7
