Carrie Rodriguez and Ben Kyle play the Dakota tonight
A couple of years ago, we posted about how swept away we were by a Ben Kyle and Carrie Rodriguez duet of "Danny Boy" that was floating around YouTube. Since that time, Kyle and his Romantica bandmates have developed a close relationship with the Austin, Texas-based songwriter and fiddler Rodriguez, touring together and and taking turns collaborating on one another's songs. Tonight, fans will have a chance to catch a pared-down gig at the Dakota featuring Kyle and Rodriguez, and it's shaping up to be a memorable night.
"Unlike May's Varsity show, this is a much more intimate thing," explains Dan Eikmeier, who works in artist relations at the Dakota. "Ben Kyle will open the show solo, Carrie will do a solo set, and Ben will join her for some duo tunes (with some minimal backup from Luke Jacobs on pedal steel). This is kind of a preparation gig for their upcoming European tour together with Romantica."
For a sneak peak, here's a video of Kyle, Rodriguez, and pedal steel player Luke Jacobs performing at a secret house show hosted by Cake in 15 last week:
Catch Ben Kyle and Carrie Rodriguez at 7 p.m. tonight at the Dakota Jazz Club. $15.
