Carly Rae Jepsen on meeting Owl City's Adam Young and "Good Time"
Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City's Adam Young before performing on Today.
As you may have gathered from this week's cover story, Gimme Noise headed down to Owatonna and met Owl City's Adam Young during one of his rare visits to his hometown. During a conversation at the local Starbucks, Young recalls that the one thing he didn't want to do early in his career was appear on TV. This week and next, that's all he's doing to promote his just-released The Midsummer Station. "I kind of see it as an exciting thing... but still a little scary," he says.
Sharing the spotlight with Young for these appearances -- America's Got Talent and the Today show this week already and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Conan next week -- is his "Good Time" duet partner Carly Rae Jepsen. While working on the story, we asked the "Call Me Maybe" singer about her initial meeting with Young when they shot the "Good Time" video in New York.
Gimme Noise: What was your first impression of Adam Young when you met him?
Carly Rae Jepsen: I thought he was charming and obviously quite talented, but honestly, the very first thought in my mind was "wow, he's a lot taller than I expected."
GN: How much input did you guys have in the overall setup of the music video?
CRJ: Well Adam had ideas and I had ideas, so we decided to email our concepts to one another. It was hilarious and perfect because we both had the exact same vision. Summertime. Casual, chill moments with friends, camping, swimming, and jamming round the campfire.
GN: Was there anything you absolutely wanted?
CRJ: This is nuts but I wanted a slushy machine. I wanted it to break and keep pouring like a LUCILLE BALL chocolate factory moment. It goes to fast and we run out of cups. We snuck that in quick.
GN: What was your favorite part of that experience?
CRJ: Driving the car. Honestly, I've never driven in NYC before and I was kind of nervous. Nothing like a camera behind and in front of you, while you're trying to drive a car, and on top of that try singing! It was so ridiculous that it was actually really fun.
GN: Where does "Good Time" take you?
CRJ: Camping with my family and friends in the summer. Best times of my life.
