Last year marked the debut of the Minnesota Shubert Performing Arts and Education Center's Groundbreaker Battle. The celebration of hip-hop music, dance, and artistry drew a large crowd of around a thousand to watch some of the best performers in Minnesota and the Midwest compete for cash prizes. The event returns this Saturday.
A family-friendly event, anyone interested in learning more about all aspects of hip-hop culture and art can attend this free festival. Throughout the day there will be workshops on breakdancing hosted by Zenon Dance Company and Motion Disorderz from Milwaukee. A panel talk will feature a discussion on the business side of hip hop. Juxtaposition Arts will also host workshops while creating live graffiti art.
In addition to hand-on activities, festival-goers can watch breakdancers from around the country compete for prizes. Live music and dancers scheduled performers include Desdamona, Dancin' Dave, Zenon Dance Company's youth hip-hop class, and last year's winners, Motion Disorderz.
The free event is located in the parking lot between the Hennepin Center for the Arts and Shubert Theater buildings (528 Hennepin Ave.) from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For more info, visit www.minnesotashubert.org.
