Boys to men: locally–filmed documentary explores masculinity
This weekend marks the broadcast of the locally made film, Journeyman. The one–hour documentary explores the recent "masculine identity crisis", following two at–risk youth as they come of age.
The documentary begins as teens Joe and Mike, who have battled depression and issues with violence, work through their problems, both past and present, with men from a local mentoring program. Co-directed and edited by Twin Cities' filmmaker Kevin Obsatz, the film features interviews with child development experts on the dissonance between boys and the male identity presented to them within pop culture a the community in general.
Journeyman has been well–received at several film festivals, has won best documentary awards at the Gloria and Landlocked film festivals.
