Bon Iver set to play SNL, Justin Vernon starts his own record label

Justin Vernon and Bon Iver had one hell of a year in 2011. Bon Iver's sophomore album is widely considered the best album of the year, the group played well-received, sold-out shows all over the world (including a memorable two-night stand at the Orpheum Theatre), and capped it all off with four Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. You can now add SNL musical guest and record label founder to Vernon and Bon Iver's growing list of accomplishments.

Far from resting on the endless amount of accolades bestowed on them recently, Vernon and his inimitable band are set to play Saturday Night Live on February 4th, looking to build some momentum leading into Grammy Night on February 12th (and perhaps ward off the potential "Who The Fuck Is Bon Iver?" meme that taunted Arcade Fire after they took home Album of the Year at last year's Grammys).

Vernon is also moving forward with his own record label, Chigliak, an imprint of Jagjaguwar which will look to rerelease lost, overlooked albums on vinyl. Vernon plans on launching Chigliak with a reissue of fellow Eau Claire band Amateur Love's album It's All Aquatic. Amateur Love features Vernon's former DeYarmond Edison bandmates Brad and Phil Cook, who have since gone on to form Megafaun.

In addition to the Amateur Love reissue, there is talk of eventually rereleasing other albums by Sarah Siskind and celebrated Minneapolis band 12 Rods. Vernon keeps his Northern Exposure moniker theme going by naming his label after Ed Chigliak, the earnest filmmaker who was one of the main characters on the beloved television series.

Bon Iver are also set to be one of the featured acts at Coachella in April, playing for what is sure to be one of their largest U.S. audiences to date. The momentum for the band (and the inevitable backlash directed towards them) continues to build, and with such high-profile performances and plans like these on the horizon, that spotlight is only bound to grow brighter by the moment.
