Black Friday Record Store Day: A guide to special sales and events in the Cities

Black Friday. Potentially the single most terrifying phrase in the English language, those two little words are a retailer's curse and a shopper's pipe dream come true. This year, if you somehow missed pitching your tent in the Best Buy parking lot in preparation for the sales, not to worry--there is an alternative, and a better one. You can take full advantage of some of the best deals in town at record stores on Friday, and plenty stores are also featuring live performances by local bands. We've conveniently compiled a list of highlights at your favorite local shops, just so you don't have to be in the dark come November 25.

The Electric Fetus

The Fetus will be featuring 20% off all merchandise in store and online (excluding tickets, tobacco, gift cards, and sale merch, of course) on both Friday and Saturday. Beyond that, they've got a special stash of Record Store Day releases to tempt and enthrall. The full list is available here, but here are a few titles we thought worth mentioning: Bob Dylan's Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? four 7" singles box set; the Civil Wars' Track in the Snow 10" vinyl EP; and Nirvana's Nevermind: The Singles four 10" vinyl box set.

Shuga Records

Shuga Records is busting out the big guns this year, with a sliding slew of discounts on used merchandise: 50% off from 9 a.m.-11 a.m., 40% off 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and 30% off from 2p.m.-7 p.m. All new merch, excluding special Black Friday Record Sale Day releases, will be 10% off for the entire day.

The fun doesn't end there--if you can't make it in early, and all that turkey and stuffing has you abed past noon, Shuga beckons you to their side of town with live music, starting at 2 p.m. With performances from locals the Sunny Era, the Sudden Lovelys, and Communist Daughter, there's no reason for you to miss out.

Fifth Element

Leave it to Fifth Element to do it up right. This year, the Uptown staple is slated for visits from Minneapolis hip hop greats, like Brother Ali, Toki Wright, P.O.S., Mike Mictlan, Prof, Big Quarters, MaLLy, St. Paul Slim, and Astronautalis. You'll have to watch their Facebook and Twitter for what time the artists will be stopping by, since they'll only be in the store for an hour. Beyond that, Fifth Element has a slew of specials, listed here on their website.

Eclipse Records

As with its Minneapolis brethren, this newly relocated and reopened St. Paul vinyl shop will be offering Record Store Day releases, in addition to hosting an in-store by Slush Puppies at 11:30 a.m.. The store also boasts that they have a wide variety of new and used vinyl that has been added to their shelves since opening in September in their new spot next to Amsterdam Bar & Hall.

Yeti Records

The charm of Yeti Records again makes itself evident this Friday, as the shop introduces sales on select records for 50 cents and $1. It's worth the stop down to see what new records they've found, knock a few names off your Christmas list for less than five bucks, and maybe score a few sweet vintage finds yourself.

Hymie's Vintage Records

The sprawling East Lake vinyl den will open at 10 a.m. and is offering 15% off everything in the store throughout the day. They will also have free coffee and cookies on hand to replenish weary Black Friday shoppers.

Roadrunner Records

The Nicollet Ave shop in South Minneapolis will open at 9 a.m. and will be giving away prizes throughout the day, including two Beach Boys Smile LPs and a grand prize Deluxe Smile Box Set. The store is also promising an expanded selection of jazz LPs.

Treehouse Records

After you've exhausted yourself during the day with your endless rummaging for limited edition vinyl and scrambling to get the very last copy of Ellie Goulding's Live at Amoeba album, you can join Treehouse Records for "Back In Black Friday," a DJ night at The King and I Thai, beginning at 9 p.m. A perfect way to cap off what is sure to be an exhausting day, we say.
