Bicycle Film Festival

For the third straight year, the international

Bicycle Film Festival

comes to Minneapolis. While all the events are worth a gander, Carl Atkinson, producer of the event, gives us her top five picks.

5. Breaking Away (Thursday, 7 pm at the Riverview Theater) Carl says: I can’t wait. We’re screening the movie in 35mm print. This is a great American film, a wonderful coming of age story. And bicycles are a major theme of the film. Breaking Away shows the obsession that people have toward bicycle racing. It’s just a great and really smart coming of age film, like Dazed and Confused or American Graffiti.

4. Fun Bike Shorts (Thursday, 9 pm at the Riverview Theater) Carl says: This collection of film shorts includes a piece by Araby Williams called St. Chino’s Run. Williams has ties to Minneapolis and is an amazing director. Following her film is something by Benny Zenga and Brian Vernor, who directed my favorite bike movie ever, Ski Boys. I’m looking forward to see what they bring this year. They are able to capture a sense of play that bikes can inject into adult life.

3. Les Ninja Du Japon (Friday, 9 pm at the Macphail Center for Music) Carl says: This film is pretty impressive. It’s a really cool documentary about 5 Japanese riders who are racing in the Tour du Faso. It’s definitely worth a look.

2. Adventures For The Cure (Saturday, 3 pm at the Theatre de la Jeune Lune) Carl says: This films details men who are in their early twenties. All have diabetes. Yet they’ve taken it upon themselves to do physically demanding activities and races to raise awareness. They compete in a cross country race [6500 miles] on fixed gear bicycles.

1.Closing Night Party (Saturday, late night in the alley at One on One Bicycle Studio) Carl says: I don’t know if I should list this but it’s an amazing event. I’d call it slightly controlled chaos. It is really kinetic. We’ll have some music and beer for sale and then usually things turn into riding around in the alley. Maybe some derbying. There’s just tons of bikes everywhere, a great outdoor summer party.

Carl says that three-time Tour de France winner Greg Lemond still might show up to an event. "He always confirms at the last minute," she says.
