How and when did you get involved with music photography?
I've been involved in photography generally for a long time, starting as a freelance photojournalist at my hometown newspaper back in high school. While I was in school at Carleton College, I worked as the media relations student photographer, which meant I photographed all sorts of events from sports to concerts on campus. After graduating, I moved to the Cities from Northfield, and started an internship with MPR and the Current. Luckily it worked out well, and I moved into a full-time position with the Current two and a half years ago.

What are some highlights of your professional photography experience?
Sometimes it feels like I have a new highlight every few weeks as various artists come through the Current's studios. Still, Johnny Rotten coming into the studio for a PIL session remains a highlight.

Where can people find your work (exhibits, album covers, publications, etc.)?
Most of my work is as the staff photographer at the the Current's official site and the Current's YouTube. But I also do some personal and freelance work as well, and that is all on my website with new work at my blog.

What is your favorite part of doing music photography?
I love the feeling of connection to the music I can get while photographing a performance. I joke sometimes that I don't know what else to do at a concert besides take photos, but I actually find myself paying even closer attention to music when photographing a performance. Additionally, I've really loved getting to know all the musicians that make up this amazing Twin Cities music community.

What dos/don'ts do you have for young photographers who would like to pursue this type of work?
Find people you trust to give critical feedback on your photos, and use that to evolve your work. Make lots of photos: Get the "safe" photo, then move on to try to something new.
