Best new bands of 2008 tonight at First Avenue

Lookbook, as seen by Isaac Gale.

It's become an annual tradition-- the gracious forfeiture of our largest, loudest, most deeply storied stage, however temporarily, to its rightful owners; the local bands that make these fair burgs of ours an inviting spot to those lucky few who get large print nationally.
This year's lineup is of special potency, damning proof that the musical output of the last year has been of uncommon value. Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapels broke the tape in our Picked to Click voting this year, and rightfully so. They wrap punchy, heartfelt songsmith in a gauze of instant appeal. The Dynamiters are a supremely well outfitted rock troupe, featuring multiple members of Selby Tigers. Lookbook broods with an ominous, reverberant synth pop, and Kristoff Krane brings the same intensely esoteric approach to rap that makes Abzorbr the powerhouse that it is.

This is a show that gives every local music fan worth their salt the opportunity to show love in a singularly noble way. With a $7.00 cover and 7 bands, it's the steal of the new year. Get out there and give back.

18+. 7:00 P.M. $7.00. With Bouncer Fighter, Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps and Yer Kronies. First Avenue Main Room, 701 1st Avenue North; 612.338.8388.
