With the year-end review season in full swing, this week marks the publication of our annual Artists of the Year issue, which pays tribute to 15 local and national artists whose voices rose above the din in 2011.

In this year's edition there are several musicians featured, including local performers Holly Newsom (of Zoo Animal) and Bethany Larson (who performs as Bethany Larson and the Bees Knees), as well as Oakland phenom Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Carrie Brownstein of Wild Flag, and Detroit MC Danny Brown. Read the full feature here.

Also in print this week, we take a look at Northeast's Pearl Studio, a relatively new venture from young brothers Zach and Noah Hollander. They've already recorded acts as disparate as 40-piece Kenyan choir, R&B singer Ann Nesby, indie-rock band Sleep Study, and pop signer-songwriter Dan Rodriquez, who says, "The place just oozes creativity and vibe. Those guys just treat you like royalty--every artist that walks in there just feels like the coolest person in the world." Read the full story by Michelle Leon here.

As with every week, you can also check out our recommended gigs in the Critics' Picks section, and read about Ray Cummings' favorite tracks of the week in his 5ingles column.
