Antibody Wanna Dance: A fundraiser for photographer Erik Hess
Chances are that you've probably never heard of Erik Hess. But if you keep up at all on the local music scene, and especially if you read this blog, then you've no doubt seen his photography before. Hess is one of our nightlife's most vibrant and prolific voices; on any given night, he's likely out and about, snapping photos and documenting the Twin Cities' best parties and concerts.
And now Hess needs our help.
Hess suffers from a rare immunodeficiency disease known as Common Variable Immunodeficiency, or CVID, and he's against the fence with with his medical bills. So his numerous friends and collaborators from the music community have organized a benefit, called Antibody Wanna Dance, set to take place at the Turf Club on Saturday, May 25.
CVID essentially inhibits the body from fighting off infections, and without regular hospital treatments, it can be debilitating, if not fatal. Hess, who works as a freelance photographer, receives federal support through the PCIP (Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan), but the exorbitant out-of-pocket maximums have long since become unmanageable--to the point that treatments eat up more than half his yearly income. Add to that the fact that he recently had to have his gall bladder removed, and you can begin to understand his plight.
Antibody Wanna Dance, which was organized by Hess himself and handful of friends, including Pink Mink singer Christy Hunt, kicks off at 7 p.m. with an auction of his photography. There will be music upstairs and in the Clown Lounge, headlined with sets by Mark Mallman and Aby Wolf (plus a "secret special guest"--ooh la la!) and DJ sets by Lady Heat. Ian Rans and Mike Fotis will serve as the evening's hosts.
Entry is $10, with proceeds going to Hess's medical bills. Hess will also be appearing on Cities 97 this Sunday at 10 p.m., and his work is currently on display at Namaste Cafe in Uptown through the end of the month.
