Blue

This first chapter of Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Three Colors" trilogy--which matches the colors of the French flag with the respective ideals of the Gallic motto "Liberty, equality, fraternity"--offers the director's majestic, almost overwhelmingly sensual meditation on one woman's attempts to discover freedom. Julie (Juliette Binoche), the wife and creative helpmate of a famous composer, loses both her husband and small child in an automobile accident. Eventually, life--in forms both gorgeous (her husband's persistent concerto commemorating Europe's reunification) and banal (a family of mice nesting in her closet)--reclaims Julie, and she once again accepts the chains of love. Beyond the film's political dimension, Blue shows that our perceptions themselves are marked by memories and ties to culture and humanity. Combined with the riot going on in Julie's head, the unreliable visuals drench the viewer in melancholic subjectivity, as if Kieslowski wanted to weigh the heaviness of Julie's inescapable burden: her understanding of life as a system of interdependent forces.
