What will be on the menu at The Gray House? There’s no telling, but you can safely guess that it won’t be the same thing you had last time you ate there. Chef and owner Ian Gray prides himself on his farmers market prowess, visiting and shopping almost every day to get inspiration for his dishes and the most of-the-moment produce and proteins. A night at this casual Lyn-Lake cafe always starts with a platter of shiny, briny olives, a flavor-packed compound butter to go on crusty bread, and Gray’s own housemade Cheez-Its, but from there the direction could veer wildly. A goat burrito with saucy pinto beans and goat’s milk sour cream; fresh pasta filled with smoked ham hocks, drizzled with a port reduction, and finished with blue cheese and hot pink pickled onions; or the most unexpected of all: something traditional, like crispy-skinned roasted chicken with herb-dressed potatoes and deeply caramelized Brussels sprouts. Even if you aren’t planning to eat, The Gray House’s intimate bar is a great alternative hangout when the Lyn-Lake hotspots are a little too hoppin’. Be sure to ask what Lucid they have on tap because their close relationship with the brewery means they sometimes stock limited release beers.
