Purple Sandpiper, which inhabits a South Lyndale Avenue strip mall, aims to bring creative, chef-driven fare to a staid, chain-restaurant dining scene, while keeping prices competitive--entrées less than $20. And the restaurant should be commended for its ability to sell sweetbreads (i.e. veal glands) to the Caesar salad and Chardonnay crowd. Some of its more experimental fare is iffy, so go there at your own risk. But if you stick to basics like the butter burger and the breakfast offerings, or a pint off the impressive tap beer list, you'll have a meal that certainly improves upon what you'd find at the Perkins down the block.
