They’re a coffee chain, yes, but because each of their stores are individually owned and operated, they’re the least chain-y of all the coffee chains. That’s why the Dunn Bros. on Grand Ave. near the Macalester campus (that’s the original store) has a completely different feel than the one in Anoka (which serves wine and beer, by the way). 25 years ago, when Dunn Bros. started, they were the only company of their kind that was committed to finding the highest-quality beans possible and roasting them in-house. As coffee house culture evolved, Dunn Bros. was at the forefront of the movement to responsibly source coffee and offer customers beans and blends from different regions, each with unique character. Their espresso drinks are always strong and never too sweet; their cold press (available in growlers during the summer) has perfectly balanced acidity; and you won’t get a scoff or a sidelong glance if you order something with soy milk like you do a some other local coffee spots. They’ve recently added their Provisions Bakery concept to several stores, so morning coffee can easily turn into afternoon pizza (yes), sandwich, or salad.
