Barbette is an Uptown dining legend--the fries consistently win awards as the best in town, the wine list is shockingly affordable and well chosen, the food has tended to showcase fine-dining sourcing at everyday prices. Seriously, this has long been the place wine and dining professionals go when they're picking up their own checks.

What a disappointing experience! After returning from a trip to Paris, my daughter and I were looking forward to a little French flavor in the Twin Cities. What we got were 2 glasses of water after a 20 minute wait by an extremely bothered and apparently mute male server who never even brought us our menues. Slighty disbelieving that there was something wrong with our expectations to have a nice dining experience, we stayed a while and watched our waiter carry on animated conversations behind the counter, and tending to other patrons who had arrived after us. After another 20 min. we left with a hearty "Au Revoir!".
Needless to say, we will not be back.

I've read recent reviews both here and elsewhere what severely criticized the service at Barbette, however I went there last Friday (10/30/09) and was treated just fine. We were promptly seated (we made reservations) and our waiter was attentive. I sometimes think people tend to be way too uptight about service, if our beer glass isn't refilled instantly we get mad. This is crazy and comes from eating in too many crappy restaurants that force food and drink AND the check on you in order to get you in and out of there as fast as possible. Here's a tip, if you get check dropped (the waiter gives you the bill without you having asked for it first) see the manager and throw the check in the trash and walk out.

Anyway, back to Barbette. I had a perfectly cooked hunk of Elk in a tasty sauce. It was served over a mushroom risotto that was OK. It included water chestnuts for some reason, while they did provide a nice crunch, they were way too stong tasting and overwhelmed the mushrooms. The frites were good as always. The escargot were nice and very garlicy, a perfect appetizer. Beer selection is good, though I miss the Saison DuPont on tap.
