When Minneapolis chef Isaac Becker (formerly of D'Amico Cucina and Café Lurcat) and his wife Nancy St. Pierre (a decade in the front of the house at Cucina) opened their homey little downtown restaurant with its cozy booths, they changed the face of fine dining in Minneapolis. First, there's finally a spot for chef-created food until 1:00 a.m. on the weekend and midnight during the week. Second, there's a bacon-and-egg sandwich that will just about make your head fly off your shoulders with pure propulsive joy: a high-heat-fried, still creamy egg, sweet, chewy thick-cut bacon, white toast, a swipe of smoky harissa, that north African red-pepper paste, and a fresh sprig of cilantro. The real revolution here, though, is that, while they excel at fine dining, they're really Minnesota's first fine-dining industry insider's restaurant, a place designed to meet the very high, and very specific, fine food and fine wine expectations of people who spend their lives in the world of fine dining, but have the tax returns of an everyday Joe. And the upstairs space makes room for a lot more of those Joes.
Wow. If you only go to one good restaurant this year, go to 112 Eatery. Every single item on the menu is something special. Go now before the economy takes away another gem.
Sit at the bar, though, because it's impossible to get a reservation!
THIS IS NOT A VEGGIE FRIENDLY RESTAURANT! I love the food, don't get me wrong, but they have barely any veggie options. I am very surprised that this is listed as that - I took my mother, a vegetarian, to this restaurant and they didn't even have one entree that didn't have meat in it. And they weren't very accomodating about it. Too. City pages - take this off the "vegetarian" list!

Overall:
This place is in the wrong category. They have a poor vegetarian selection. Plus, they even sell foie gras which is made from forcing grain down the throats of ducks and geese until their internal organs burst. They also sell veal which confines baby calves to cages so small they cannot turn around.

Overall:
My friends and I went to the 112 Eatery expecting to be dazzled after reading all of the fantastic reviews on their website and from bits and pieces of foodie magazine articles commending the restaurant as being the "IT" reservation in Minneapolis. I could not have been more disappointed in the service and the food we received there. For starters our waiter, who we were forced to give a 20% gratuity to at the end of the night, was not only a poor server and an arrogant person, but was outright rude to the gentleman in my party that inquired about the 'Prosciutto and Frybread' dish, exclaiming that it hardly needed an explanation. Although my 'Romain and Roquefort' salad was excellent, my Tagliatelle and Fois Gras was overcooked, with sauceless and overseasoned egg noodles that could be lifted off my plate by sticking my fork into the middle of them. The meatballs were delicious, however, even though I could have sworn I ordered a half but received a whole serving. The cauliflower fritters were also excellent, though my companions frybread was nearly inedible as it had apparently been rolled in salt. After this we hardly were interested in dessert or sticking around for an after dinner spirit, and still the whole experience took us 2.5 hours. There are many excellent restaurants out there that are in need of patronage during this economic downturn, this is surely not one of them.

Last night was our first visit to 112, we had been looking forward to it. Had a 5:30 reservation, the place is very small and narrow and, in general, it comes off as a bit quirky. When we arrived it was about half full. The food is definitely creative and interesting, although not always in a good way, but better than the boring fare you find at other places. Usually when we test out a new place we try several appetizers. This is the first time that the entrees far exceeded the appetizers, it's always been the other way around. The steak tartare was good but HUGE, way too much for 2 people. We did not like the mussels, the cinnamon in the dish didn't work for either of us. The entrees we tried; the steak, pasta with pate meatballs, and the fried bread and prosciutto were GREAT. By far, the big complaint was the service. I don't know if our server was on medication or high or what, but she was behaving in a very "dreamy" state throughout the entire experience. Her timing was completely off, we sat through most of our entrees without any drinks, she brought my husband's coffee just AFTER he finished dessert (he didn't order espresso, just regular coffee so not exactly rocket science). There were two times during dinner where we were contemplating just getting the check right away and bailing on the whole thing. And when you consider how many really great servers are out of work these days, it's astonishing that someone like her has a gig in one of the hottest restaurants in town. It was very strange - and being my birthday - a pretty big disappointment.
