While you might walk right past this hole-in-the-wall storefront café without even noticing it, Pho Ca-Dao is a beloved neighborhood Vietnamese joint in the heart of St. Paul’s diverse Frogtown. They keep things consistent by keeping them simple, with only two menu options: “Traditional “ Pho -- made with the usual flank steak, tripe, and tendon -- and a “House Special” version with additional beef and meatballs. There’s also a make-your-own soup option and a couple of appetizers, but this family-run greasy spoon has been perfecting their recipe for years, so why bother gilding the lily? Rich, unctuous broth marries to satisfyingly toothsome noodles, along with all the usual fixin’s, including a delicious homemade chili paste. While it’s not much to look at, and strictly cash-only, Pho Ca-Dao is a dark-horse candidate for best Pho in the Cities.
