Northeast Social is steeped in the traditions of the neighborhood surrounding the Grain Belt Brewery, where Minneapolis's working class gathered in the churches and bars situated on practically every corner. The clubby space, with its original pressed tin ceiling, exposed brick walls, and sidewalk seating, is the sort in which you'd like to linger. Owners Joe Wagner and Sam Bonin created what might be described as Parisian bistro meets Buena Vista Social Club in the Midwest and tapped their pal Eddie Hayes Jr., formerly of Heartland, W.A. Frost, and I Nonni, to run the kitchen. Hayes's frequently changing menu has a more global influence than other restaurants in the area and offers snacks like matchstick fries and deep-fried okra or Welsh rarebit that pair perfectly with any of the Social's sharable beers. Other favorite dishes include the lamb sandwich with watercress and mint pesto, chard-stuffed trout, and rosemary-honey panna cotta.
