The University of Minnesota men's hockey team is one of the most successful athletic programs for the Golden Gophers. In addition to numerous conference championships in the WCHA, the squad won the Division I NCAA Hockey Championships in both 2002 and 2003. The Gopher men's hockey team has always prided itself on recruiting mainly from the state of Minnesota, which means the fans' attachment to these homegrown athletes is deeply rooted in local pride. After playing their home games in an older portion of Williams Arena until 1993, the team moved to the distinctly modern Mariucci Arena the following season. In 2013, the Gopher men's hockey team recently joined the six-team Big 10 Conference, severing ties with the WCHA in an effort to strengthen the newly formed Big 10 hockey conference.
