There are few true, classic American diners left in the Twin Cities, and it seems like Mickey’s is the only one that gets any attention. But Bonnie’s Cafe on University Avenue next to the Dubliner Pub is our top pick when it comes to greasy spoon breakfast - and it’s not even all that greasy. Catering mostly to the early morning blue-collar crowd and post-mass church-goers on Sunday, Bonnie’s does breakfast classics right: fluffy hotcakes, generous piles of crispy flat-top cooked hash browns, an endless supply of good ol’ unfancy drip coffee, hamburger steak (yes), and roast beef hash that will garner compliments from even the most curmudgeonly grandpa. There’s no better or more appropriately retro (without trying to be retro) spot for lunch than at Bonnie’s mint green bar stools and front counter where you can enjoy a tuna melt or BLT but make sure to leave a little room for pie. It’s not a real diner experience without it.
