The Mystery of Irma Vep

The Mystery of Irma Vep

Ed Huyck

The campy Mystery of Irma Vep is a chance for a pair of actors to really show what they are made of. These two must be ready to play a bevy of characters, sometimes shifting within seconds from one role to the next. The Jungle found success with the show in 2010, featuring the high-energy pairing of Bradley Greenwald and Steven Epp. Greenwald is back for a new production of the show, now teamed with the talented Stephen Cartmell (Epp is in Louisville working on a production of Love's Labour's Lost that will arrive in the Twin Cities later in the fall). Joel Sass returns to direct for a second time. Charles Ludlam's play takes the elements of Gothic mysteries and horrors and ramps them up to 11, and then rewires the amp and jacks it up even higher in this fast-paced piece. Along the way, we get a frightened high-class couple, hired hands, an Egyptian goddess, and vampires all packed together in a mansion loaded with hidden passages and other secrets. Ludlam's play won multiple awards when it was first produced in the mid-1980s, and has been a favorite target of actors looking to showcase their ability to play against type and gender — and make insanely fast costume and wig changes along the way.
