If you've wisely picked up Purple Snow, the Numero Group's recent collection of Twin Cities R&B from the '70s and '80s, you'll have seen many of Charles Chamblis's striking color photos. Active from the '60s through the late '80s, Chamblis was a versatile professional photographer, taking portraits and publicity shots and working at weddings, family reunions, graduations – you name it, he was there, day by day building up a rich study of the Twin Cities African American community. He was frequently on hand at the nightclubs and community centers where the Minneapolis sound was incubated, and his work – sometimes winningly offhand, sometimes carefully composed – has a saturated musicality to it whether the subject is musical or not. For this exhibit, Chamblis's photos are augmented by artifacts, including a few costumes worn in Purple Rain. There will be a public reception with music and teen photography from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 29. (Pictured: Spider J. Hamilton)
