Saint Martin's Day Celebration

Saint Martin's Day Celebration

For those of you who don't know who Saint Martin is (myself included until recently), he was a Roman soldier-turned-monk whose claim to fame was cutting his cloak in half to share with a homeless beggar during a snowstorm. Today, the saint is heartily celebrated in many Germanic countries in much the same way we celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, though combined. There are usually special dinners, treats for children, and gift-giving involved. This Sunday, Minnesota families can get in on the party. There will be lantern-making, traditional music, and a theatrical performance by the Germanic American Institute. Children will then march with their lanterns through Rice Park in a parade led by Saint Martin on horseback, followed by coffee, hot chocolate, and tasty German treats at the Landmark Center.
