Before breaking out our autumn wardrobes, Minnesotans can celebrate the waning days of summer at the Minnesota State Fair. First held in 1859, the Great Minnesota Get-Together has maintained its original agrarian character with the perpetually popular livestock competitions, even while adding interactive displays on green agricultural technologies and a "Common Table" exhibit that explains community-based sustainable food systems. The State Fair has always represented more than farming, of course, as evidenced by the new History and Heritage Center showcasing artifacts representative of the event's long existence. Current attractions can be found around every corner, including an Extreme Canine Stunt Show, starring rescue dogs, and Arts A-Fair, wherein performance artists offer surprising pop-up routines. For many, the Fair's single greatest draw remains the 300-plus concession stands offering such enticements as a breakfast Juicy Lucy, PB&J French toast, walleye mac and cheese, and deep-fried lobster on a stick. To accompany the roving feast, many revelers will no doubt thirst for the malt and hop varieties at the "Land of 10,000 Beers" exhibit. Thrill seekers, on the other hand, can satisfy their cravings with a visit to the Mighty Midway (or its junior companion, the Kidway). And although evening entertainment choices range from Grandstand productions to the more modest stages located throughout the grounds, every night culminates in grand fashion with a dazzling fireworks show to close out another summer on a spectacular note.
