Hungry Planet: What the World Eats

Let's say you're planning a trip to the grocery store tonight. Your shopping list might consist of items like Honeycrisp apples, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, and locally grown sweet corn. Now let's pretend that you live in China, Ecuador, or Germany. How would that shopping list change? This is one of many questions asked in "Hungry Planet," an exhibit, inspired by the best-selling book by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Alusio, exploring what people eat around the world. Guests can check out Menzel's colorful, large-scale photos showing families dining, and standing with the contents of their fridges and pantries in a food-and-family portrait. There are also pictures of people shopping at markets and grocery stores, and eating at restaurants. "Hungry Planet" additionally follows how food is cultivated, grown, and processed, depending on its region of origin and sales destination. Guests will learn about the rise of fast-food culture, how globalization affects consumption, and the influence of local markets. At the opening reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 22, visitors can sample snack foods from various cultures while learning a little bit about how their last meal made it from the fields, the slaughterhouse, and the warehouse to their plate.
