Black Label Movement: Wreck

Black Label Movement: Wreck

Brad Richason

As a narrative setup, few scenarios allow for an exploration of human nature quite like trapping a temperamental group of personalities in confined quarters. Taken a fatal step further, when the location is deadly as well as inescapable, the characters have no choice but to reflect on the inevitability of their own demise. But whereas more conventional treatments of the premise rely on defiant melodramatics, Black Label Movement, one of the most reliably innovative dance companies in the Twin Cities, leaps gracefully into the shadowy abyss with Wreck. Discarding dialogue, the emotionally charged storyline is conveyed through the hypnotic movements of a 13-person cast as they physically enact the harrowing distress of being caught in the hold of a sinking ship. From interlocking patterns to breakaway solos, the evocative arrangements capture a sense of urgency that ranges from enraged resistance to resigned acceptance. Created by Black Label Movement's founder, Carl Flink, Wreck was inspired by the artist's father, a Great Lakes ore boat crewman in the late 1950s. This historic backdrop is recalled in a set design that incorporates archival 8mm footage of ore boats of the 1960s. Sealing the immersive atmosphere is a haunting score by Mary Ellen Childs that mirrors the intensity of the situation. By the end, audiences may just find a new appreciation for life aboard a sinking ship. (Photo by Bill Cameron)
