Beausoleil/Caravan of Thieves

Beausoleil/Caravan of Thieves

—RICK MASON

Four decades after the Cajun cultural renaissance began, Michael Doucet et amis' Beausoleil is still its heart and soul. They keep standards alive while finding ties between southwest Louisiana and world music. On last year's From Bamako to Carencro, the band covers a pair of tunes from pioneering fiddle icons Dennis McGee and Canray Fontenot, plus a traditional two-step. Then it goes venturing, to Mali, the Caribbean, and the Apollo Theatre, the last in a mind-bending cover of James Brown's "I'll Go Crazy," complete with Doucet's Cajunized version of Brown's classic yowl and swirling accordion. Gypsy jazz is the foundation of opener Caravan of Thieves' eclectic sound, which combines Beatlesesque pop, freak folk, chamber rock, and punkish fiddle forays. (Photo by Rick Olivier)
