Balls

When Balls kicked off in August of 1991, it was planned to run for only six nights as a celebration of spontaneous performance. Originally dubbed as guerilla theater, Balls would show up in random theater spaces late at night as an uncensored, free-form performance night. Now, approximately 16 years later, Balls still has bite, even if it has resided comfortably at the Southern Theater for quite some time. The name most likely refers to its founder, Leslie Ball, rather than the cojones necessary to get up in front of a crowd. Arrive at midnight, and you will find a wide variety of ham on stage, from traveling musicians looking to strum a new ditty, to college theater majors reenacting their favorite Grace Kelly movie, to professional dancers who just want to lip-sync to something silly, and even a few poets and budding authors thrown in for good measure. Each night varies in tone and content, depending on who was visited by their muse that week. Looking to perform as well? You must first pay your dues: Though material is never screened or censored, Leslie Ball requires that performers attend at least one show before trying their hand at the open stage. After that, you can always sign up beforehand. Call 612.340.0155 ext. 25 for more info.
