Art Expanded, 1958-1978

It was a heady time of happenings: the dawn of performance art, a stripping way to conceptualism, the onset of video, an introduction to experimental sound. The 1960s and '70s instigated all manner of confrontational expression through art heavy with the freedom of possibility. A new show at the Walker Art Center celebrates the works of those free thinkers – including Yoko Ono, John Cage, Allan Kaprow, and Merce Cunningham – who forever changed our creative culture. Included in the exhibition is the museum's signature collection of Fluxus works – such as multiples, event scores, and sundry objects – that attest to the scope and intensity of the era's spirit of reinvention.
