Americana

Jessica Armbruster

While the Soap Factory's latest show opened a few weeks ago, this weekend is a good time to revisit it or see it for the first time. "Americana," curated by Ben Heywood, features the work of nine emerging artists from various cities in North America. Their work — which includes video, sculpture, photography, and other mediums — examines the broad and ever-changing subject of "America" and "the American experience." The pieces are as varied as you would expect, ranging from humorous to weighty, nostalgic to bitingly political. There's photography of cheerleaders, seemingly marching off a cliff; a quiet-looking church that sits atop a manicured lawn; and a race car looking defeated and on fire. Whether you leave feeling patriotic and/or proactive is up to you. Hours Fourth of July weekend are 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 3, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 6.
