2014 Minnesota Biennial

Camille Lefevre

One of the most outstanding shows so far this year was the Minnesota Museum of American Art's "Objects: MMAA" exhibition. The exhilarating collection of pieces from the itinerant museum's stellar collection generated surprise, awe, and delight at every turn. MMAA has been setting up house in its project space on Robert Street in St. Paul, and it is reviving its "Minnesota Biennial" series this summer. The competition was open to artists throughout the state, and intends to highlight a premiere selection of artwork and crafts currently being made here. The blind jury process has resulted in a showcase featuring a wide range of media, including painting, installation, performance art, and social practice. The artists themselves are also a mixed bunch, from emerging to internationally renowned, urban to rural. There will be a public opening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, and artist's talks at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12, and July 26. (Pictured: work by Michelle Johnson)
