20 for 20: Celebrating Textile Center's 20th Birthday

20 for 20: Celebrating Textile Center's 20th Birthday

Jessica Armbruster

In 1994, a group of textile artists and patrons founded the Textile Center with the goal of preserving techniques, showcasing talent, and sharing resources. Twenty years later, the organization is flourishing. Each year, the center hosts workshops and classes, super popular sales where guests scoop up fabrics for upcoming projects, and exhibitions showcasing a variety of fiber artists, from basket weavers to rug makers, students to teachers. For the anniversary show, "20 for 20," work from 20 artists who have contributed to the mission of the Textile Center over the years will be highlighted. This includes pieces from master dyer Susan Antell, doll maker Julie Branch, macrame food sculptor Ed Bing Lee, felt maker Robbin Firth, and Uosis Juodvaliks and Jacquelyn Rice, who specialize in transferring digital prints to fabric. There will be an opening reception starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, August 28, at the Community Dye Garden on Fourth and 29th Streets, followed by festivities at the Center at 6 p.m. (Clockwise: Donna Kallner, Ripple Effect; Rebecca McEntee, Surf; Robbin Firth, Mega Ruffle Shawl; Karen Searle, Faux Fur)
