Station 4

Station 4 boasts a convenient location, friendly bar staff, an unostentatious neighborhood-bar atmosphere and a stage area that accommodates metal's loudness well.
Clubhouse Jager

Clubhouse Jager

This immaculately-restored Germanic-style pub with its popular outdoor patio is a sort of trendy end-cap of the Warehouse district's nightlife, foregoing a TV-assault atmosphere of noise for a relatively low-key atmosphere.
Whole Music Club

Whole Music Club

Nestled in the basement of Coffman Union, the Whole has been a fixture on the U of M's campus since the hippie days. There's no such thing as an expensive show here -- typical cover charge is $5 or less.

  • Bamboo Betty

    Bamboo Betty's

3800 Restwood Road Circle Pines, MN 55014
    763-786-1014

Bar-goers tend to also enjoy bar-hopping, even in tiny Lexington. That makes Bamboo Betty's across-the-street proximity to Cowboy's Saloon valuable. Business is good on the weekends with crowds dominated by youngish domestic beer-swilling locals. The space functions like a smaller version of the Cabooze: a rectangular bar lined with hightop tables greets visitors while a band stage and floor space occupies the rear wall. A popular party spot in the north 'burbs. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>

  • Bayport BBQ

    Bayport BBQ

    328 5th Ave. N. Bayport, MN 55003
    651-955-6337

http://www.bayportbbq.com In Texas, barbecue aficionados have been known to drive 50 miles for lunch. And before Bayport BBQ opened in the St. Croix River town by the same name, Minnesotans in search of Texas-style smoked brisket, ribs, sausage, and chicken would have needed at least a tank or two of gas. Previously the more formal Bayport Cookery, the BBQ spot has retained the building's pretty stained glass, but it now has white paper on the tabletops, plays gut-punching blues on overhead televisions, and serves meat by the pound, family style, on big metal trays. The meat is consistently smoky and tender, whether served sliced, pulled, sausage-cased, or still on the bone--and it can be gussied up with bites of creamy potato au gratin, baked beans, and pickles. A few other nice touches: Recycled Corona bottles filled with barbecue sauce line up on a warmer; sweet tea and bloody Marys made with white whiskey are served in Mason jars, and Bayport bakes its own artisan-style rolls in lieu of packaged white bread. When there's nary a scrap of meat left on the tray, you can take your slice of pecan pie for the road. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>

  • Cowboy

    Cowboy's Saloon

3801 Westwood Road Circle Pines, MN 55014
    763-784-6560

Cowboy's Saloon looks like a beat-up Wild West saloon from the outside - the door handles consist of antique firearms. Inside, it's still the Wild West, but affluent. It could be the mayor's house, or the sheriff's. A mural depicting a western bar scene accents the pool room wall. Softly-lit booths line the walls. A room lit by fireplace sits sectioned off away from the potentially louder bar area. While cowboy-themed country bars continue to pop up around the metro, this place does it right. • Inn Kahoots

    Inn Kahoots

45 Hamel Road Hamel, MN 55340
    763-478-6070

This local Hamel bar has been around for over a hundred years. Without all the nylon beer and parking signs, Inn Kahoots might just blend in with the neighborhood homes. While most bars choose not to embrace all four seasons Minnesota has to offer, Inn Kahoots boasts broomball teams and pool leagues in the winter, while volleyball teams, a rodeo dance and a yearly motorcycle run to benefit MS round out the summer months. A daily happy hour, weekly karaoke, meat raffle, and ladies night are year-round staples. Country music is the ambient audio of choice, while decor centers around pool tables, neon beer signs and framed alcohol endorsements, as well as a pull tab booth. Take special note of a sticker posted in the bar area: "sarcasm is just one more free service we offer." Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>

http://www.serumsanoka.com Serum's Good Time Emporium transports you back to the days when streetcars lined Jackson Avenue and the Rum River was the only means of transport. Anoka certainly has come a long way since then, and Serum's celebrates that time with its monumental collection of antiques. The pieces range from nostalgic childhood toys to black and white photos of the city, all of which fit in with the restored building where Serum's resides. The brick walls, wood floors and booths all give Serum's a rugged feel, but the bar maintains a welcoming hometown vibe. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
