http://www.thecedar.org While they've hosted plenty of touring and local rock and jazz bands, this West Bank institution is the place to go if you want to see the cream of world music. This converted movie theater, featuring both seated and standing viewing, has hosted everything from Tuvan throat singing to Scandinavian folk to African hip hop and beyond, making it one of the most globally illuminating venues in the Midwest. Some may call it a dive bar, but the Cedar Inn is more accurately described as a delightfully small-town sort of spot, located in the heart of South Minneapolis. Expect a friendly crowd of locals, some seated on a picnic table out front when the weather's nice, as well as checkered decor, typical bar fare and affordable beer and wine. Also expect to be offered the beer list if you ask for a rum and coke -- Cedar Inn, like many establishments in the neighborhood, does not serve hard liquor. http://www.chatterboxpub.net There are dreams you never knew you had, like the dream of being instantly transported to the best basement in town, circa 1983, where you can play Atari in television/lounge-chair/couch pits. Don't you wish Mom would have brought you craft-brewed ale and a basket of fries while you crouched in the darkness? Well, Mom never would, but the friendly staff at the Chatterbox will. Not for everyone, but there's something about this wine and beer bar that speaks to Gen Xers and Gen Yers in a special language. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
http://www.chatterboxpub.net Those who've lived in the 'hood for a while may remember the days when the space just off Cleveland and Ford Parkway was just another late-night Perkins hangout. These days the space, now doubled, serves as a sort of super-sized version of the original South Minneapolis Chatterbox, with the same karaoke, the same trivia, the same food and drinks and board games and vintage video games in front of comfy old sofas, but quadrupled and with better (read: less fried food smell) ventilation. http://www.thechoicegc.com With an apt name, Choice is one of the more upscale spots to see exotic dancers in the city, though it by no means feels exclusive. Located in a simple white building in the warehouse district, and down the street from the flashier Deja Vu and the grittier Sex World, its vibe is slightly more casual, more professional, less big bright lights and neon undergarments. Also note that the venue does not sell liquor, which means its dancers perform fully nude, both onstage and in private lap dance cubbies. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
http://www.myspace.com/bigvs While Minneapolis has the Terminal Bar, St. Paul has Christensen's Big V's: a funky dive where you can catch a multi-band bill for a negligible cover charge and have plenty of cash left over to down a few drinks. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>

http://www.claddaghirishpubs.com Claddagh's decor makes you feel like you're in an old Irish castle: high ceilings, a fireplace and stained glass windows are encompassed by sturdy brick walls. Even with the old-country inspiration behind Claddagh, it still incorporates modern bar amenities, from flatscreen TVs to patio seating with a fire pit. The menu features many classic Irish dishes, as well as an appropriately lengthy whiskey selection. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
http://www.clubunderground.us Looking for live music or comedy but not in the mood to tackle the crowds downtown? Located below the Spring Street Tavern, Club Underground offers both, Thursdays through Sundays. Don't let the dungeon-like quality of this basement venue fool you; most nights the club features your typically friendly crowd of Northeast folks. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
http://www.clubjager.com This immaculately-restored Germanic-style pub with its popular outdoor patio is a sort of trendy end-cap of the Warehouse district's nightlife, foregoing a TV-assault atmosphere of noise for a relatively low-key atmosphere. At least, it's relatively low-key in the early evenings -- later at night, their itinerary covers live-band shows and dance parties like the popular, eclectic rock offerings of Transmission. http://www.thecoffeegrounds.net Located just north of the Hamline campus, The Coffee Grounds provides a cozy environment to enjoy some fair-trade coffee and maybe a scoop of ice cream if the mood strikes. With a wide array of monthly events, including card games, sewing circles, singer-songwriter nights, and poetry readings, the coffee shop offers a little something for everybody. Folks may walk in for a lunch meeting and find themselves sticking around to get a dose of neighborhood culture. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>

http://www.corkspub.com Cork's Irish Pub is tucked away on the outer fringes of downtown St. Paul, but its comparatively off-the-path location doesn't keep this cheerfully decorated, old-timey bar (complete with penny-farthing bicycle) from being lively on a weeknight. And while its proximity to the Embassy Suites hotel may be a factor, there's still plenty to attract the locals, from music and trivia nights to a Sunday afternoon build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. http://www.yourcornercoffee.com Walk into this Warehouse District coffee shop, and you might be a bit waylaid by the idiosyncratic style: rustic mid-American murals and cabin-house wood trim share space with colorful mod decor, all in a space that, name notwithstanding, technically sits in the middle of the block. But with live music performances, art showings and all-day breakfasts, it doesn't take long to feel at home here. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
http://www.cosmosrestaurant.com It might not be one of the seven wonders of the world, but it sure ranks as one of the seven design wonders of Minnesota. The word breathtaking doesn't even do justice to this Charles-and-Ray-Eames-meet-the-Matrix marvel of a dining room, where elements of classic Modernism are interpreted through natural, elemental materials. The kitchen uses top-shelf ingredients (like meats and cheeses culled from the best farms in the country, including products from some of the best Minnesota farmers). By the time you're swooning over your plate at Cosmos, you will have mastered at least one of the mysteries of the cosmos-namely, where the heck the place is. (Up on the fourth floor of the Graves 601 Minneapolis, on First Avenue, accessible only through the hotel lobby.) Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
http://www.costellosbar.com This retro-themed watering hole in St. Paul's Cathedral Hill neighborhood promotes good drinks, great food and an attitude-free environment. With a respectable selection of taps and a menu that doesn't consider crab cakes to be bar food, Costello's provides a casual alternative to some of the higher-end Selby Avenue establishments. If you're looking for cheap drinks, wings and burgers in Uptown, the Country Bar fits the bill. This venue also features regular karaoke, DJs, and a casual atmosphere that might remind you of one of your grandpa's rural Minnesota haunts by day but turns over to a younger crowd by night. http://www.theaftermidnightgroup.com With the recent onslaught of cowboy-themed bars and clubs, Cowboy Jack's has found its niche in the suburban landscape of Plymouth. It's clear from the moment you grab the entry door handle, only to realize it's actually a pistol grip. The story of Wild Bill Hickok's demise is centered above the bar, while saddles, wagon wheels and lantern chandeliers provide additional Old West vibes. Live music is scheduled every night, and the menu items are a couple notches above your average bar food. Feel free to grab a handful of peanuts, and no need to find a place for the empty shells -- the ground is just as good as any. Read more about this Minneapolis bar or club >>
Cowboy's Saloon looks like a beat-up Wild West saloon from the outside - the door handles consist of antique firearms. Inside, it's still the Wild West, but affluent. It could be the mayor's house, or the sheriff's. A mural depicting a western bar scene accents the pool room wall. Softly-lit booths line the walls. A room lit by fireplace sits sectioned off away from the potentially louder bar area. While cowboy-themed country bars continue to pop up around the metro, this place does it right.
