The home recording project of 22-year-old Idaho musician Trevor Powers, Youth Lagoon is aptly named. Sounding boyish but broken, the 10 tunes that make up YL's debut, The Year of Hibernation, coat Powers's innocent yearning in murky reverb. While it's near impossible to make out much of what he's singing, those snippets that are clearly audible — "It's just me in my room with my eyes shut" — are in sync with the hushed intimacy of Powers's spare but mesmerizing melodies. Favoring fuzzy synthesizers and wobbly drum-machine rhythms, Youth Lagoon's heady bedroom pop isn't for everybody, but those enamored of idiosyncratic songwriters will find plenty to love in Powers's solipsistic but sly songs. With Father John Misty and Onuinu. 18+.
