Youngblood Brass Band
The Youngbloods originated in the '90s as high schoolers around Madison, Wisconsin, inspired by the funky, bopped-up neo New Orleans brass band tradition established by the likes of the Dirty Dozen. The 10-piece Youngbloods, including Twin Citians Adam Meckler on trumpet and Matt Hanzelka on trombone, capture the raucous street vibe of Crescent City outfits with their nimble, blistering horn attack, rumbling sousaphone, and funked-up parade rhythms, building a blustery head of steam. Infusions of Latin, rock, and especially hip-hop often complicate things. YBB's new Pax Volumi splits almost in half, the first five tracks dominated by David Henzie-Skogen's occasionally clever rants and collage-like arrangements tied to hip-hop beats. The rest are instrumental tracks that let the horns loose. Local rapper Botzy opens. 18+. (Photo by Britt Nemeth)
