Young Dance at Large: Spring Concert

Since the early 1980s, site-specific performance has grown in popularity as a way to specifically tailor a piece to a certain location. Locally, Skewed Visions has emerged on the forefront of this type of work, creating productions for places such as office buildings, a rooftop observatory, a former marble factory, and so forth. Its current show, Black Water, is at the former Mediterranean Market. For Young Dance at Large's spring concert, the company of local youths worked with artists from Skewed Visions — as well as Body Cartography Project, Croi Glan Integrated Dance Theater, Marylee Hardenberg, Megan Flood, Miriam Colvin, and Erin Thompson — to create dances under a bridge, on a snowy hill, in a pool, an atrium, and a school. While the performance itself takes place at a traditional space (the Barbara Barker Center for Dance), it can be argued that the show honors the site-specific tradition, as each dance belongs to a particular place, and has been transferred to the centralized location.
