Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' early-'00s arrival on New York's then-popping rock landscape, no band besides the one of Karen O, Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase has been able to give off quite the same energy, the same chemistry, the same cool. It was a shame we had to go nearly four years between third album It's Blitz! and April's Mosquito, but the YYYs predictably pulled through with songs of both angels (the very pretty "Wedding Song") and aliens ("Area 52"). Karen O's voice is still a thing to behold, at turns haunting and endearingly weepy, while Zinner weaves melodic leads ("Sacrilege") with slicing post-punk crunch (the James Murphy-produced "Buried Alive" featuring Dr. Octagon). Above all, the record is a reminder that no act does the YYYs like the NYC trio do themselves. With Maximum Hedrum. 18+. (Photo by Dan Martensen)
