World Cup Soccer
It happens every four years. As the world gathers and nations put their collective pride onto 23 dudes running around playing a game, most Americans feel a blended sense of guilt and apathy. We don't care about soccer on the same level as the rest of the world, but we probably should. Thankfully, the Nomad World Pub has figured out a way to jam soccer into our hearts through our stomachs and livers. The bar is celebrating the "beautiful game" by hosting a World Cup-long series of parties that includes Jumbotron screenings and outdoor grilling, plus food and drink specials to attract both hardcore fans and new ones. One of the more exciting World Cup parties at the Nomad will be on Saturday, June 12, when the USA takes on England in our nation's first game in the tourney. That day the Nomad will be hosting a block party with a giant screen for viewing, and following the battering America will receive (probably), you can lick your wounds while taking in live music from Mark Mallman and Communist Daughter (the event starts at 11 a.m., the game is at 1:30 p.m.). See the Nomad's site for a full list of festivities, including a second blowout for the final game from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 11, and early-bird meals for games starting at 6:30 a.m. For other bars around town celebrating the World Cup with special events and general screenings, click here
